Characters and personas of Molecular Reality Corporation

Keltar, the company's mascot, as pictured in its field guide

This is a list of the fictional characters and personas used by Molecular Reality Corporation in its games, member software, website and publications. They range from the company's two mascots, a felt puppet and a clay demon, to the monsters of its quiz dungeon, an appliance inspector in a browser game and the senders of messages in its member inbox. Each is listed with its first appearance on record.

The characters do much of the company's explaining. Its list of frequently asked questions is written in the voice of one of them, its quiz is hosted by the same one, and the last monster of its quiz dungeon fights by raising objections to the company's plans.[1] The company keeps the fiction labeled; the mascot's own account of himself is "I am a puppet with a processor, and I say so happily."[1]

Sender personas

Messages in the inbox of EQBio-OS, the company's member software, arrive in the names of characters kept in a table of their own (see Sender personas of EQBio-OS). Keltar and Maxine are not in the table; their names and portraits are written into the code.[3]

Character classes

Players of Epic Quest Bio, the role-playing game through which the company organizes its work, each take a major and a minor character class. Nine are current: ByteBender, Cleric, Ludician, Magic User, MechE, Rogue, Scientist, Sparky and Warrior. They descend from eight introduced in a 2025 essay by the founder: Sciencer, Sparky, Gearhead, Ludician, Spellbinder, Cleric, Barbarian and Bytebender.[11] The classes carry no game statistics. Each has a painted poster in the header of the member software.

Origins

Maxine is the oldest character with a documented source. A colleague who saw the founder's sliding pores around 2015 was reminded of "those little cartoons" explaining Maxwell's demon, the imp of James Clerk Maxwell's 1867 thought experiment who sorts fast molecules from slow ones at a small door. The cartoons gave the company its first name, demonpore, and Maxine is the demon from them.[2] Keltar's fiction places his arrival in 2012, the year the founder first thought of mechanical nanopores, and makes him a tulpa, a being brought into existence by thought.[3]

The game characters borrow from older fiction. The crawl's full title, Dungeons & Diligence, adapts Dungeons & Dragons, and its last monster is a dragon. The dragon in Labyrinth of the Dragon Tyrant comes from the philosopher Bostrom's 2005 fable, in which a dragon that eats people stands for aging.[12]
