Ludician is the game designers' class among the nine character classes of Epic Quest Bio, the role-playing game through which Molecular Reality Corporation organizes its work. The word was coined for the class from the Latin ludus, "game", and the founder's essay that introduced the classes in 2025 defines it in its first three words: "You design games".[1] A Player Scientist may take it as a major or a minor class. It kept its name when four of the original eight were renamed in 2026.
Name
Ludus covered a good deal of Roman life. It meant a game or play, the ludi were the public games, and the same word named an elementary school and the barracks where gladiators trained. The class name adds the ending of "musician" and "physician". English already had "ludic", relating to play, and "ludology", the study of games, which supplies the adjective in the class's one quest.
In Les jeux et les hommes (1958), the French sociologist Roger Caillois used ludus for one pole of play: the pleasure of solving a difficulty set up on purpose, governed by arbitrary and often tedious rules. He set it against paidia, free and turbulent improvisation.[2] Twenty years earlier the Dutch historian Johan Huizinga had called his study of play Homo Ludens, "man the player".[3]
Origins
The founder's essay, "How to Play Epic Quest Bio", was the landing text of epicquest.bio in 2025. Its Ludician understands "that fun might be the most powerful motivator in the universe" and will "transform grinding data collection into thrilling adventures, turn tedious calibration into boss battles, and make your fellow Player Scientists™ feel like heroes saving the world". The paragraph ends: "Without you, we're just another boring biotech company. With you, we'll eventually be the world's first biotech company that millions of people will feel like they're a part of."[1]
In the company's database the Ludician is the fourth of the eight original classes, with the color 0, 206, 217 in RGB, a turquoise, and the same placeholder description as the others: "The Ludician class is vital to the mission. [Edit this description in the Command Deck]". Its flat icon is a cyan ball-and-stick molecule in a pink frame.[4] A design draft of May 2025 used a different name for the same role, "Ludic Engineer (Game Designer)", with the titles "The Architect of Awesome, The Maestro of Mechanics, The Funsmith Supreme" and a mentor called Baron/Baroness von Pixelhausen.[4] The help file of the member software, which glosses six other classes, leaves the Ludician out.[5]
Poster
The poster is made to look like the cover of a worn paperback. Lavender letters outlined in red spell the class name across the top. Below, a hooded figure leans over a board of glowing pawns in purple, red, orange, green and blue and star-shaped tokens, surrounded by four framed icons: a DNA helix, a molecule, a trophy and a bar chart.[4] A member who clicks it opens the company's chat, LabChat, with "Ludician question:" already typed.
Work of the class
The class's one named quest, "contribute to MQ", was worth 5,000 experience points and asked members to "Make a ludological contribution to Maxine's Quest". It has been switched off, like a 2,500-point quest to "Make a simulator that teaches people how nanopores work and lets more advanced players test out ideas" and a 100-point invitation to "Discuss the MMORPG we are building for Epic Quest Bio™".[4] The simulator exists as Nanopore Studio, which opened in the member software in April 2026.
The company's games are listed in List of Molecular Reality Corporation games. The founder describes Spyke Hunter, which played on the signal of knots in a nylon string pulled through a 2 mm hole, as "the first 'molecular game' we coded", named "because I was making a pun on 'Spy Hunter' (a 1980s arcade game)". He added: "Maybe I don't always give things the best names?"[6] Maxine's Quest is both a game and the control software of the company's instrument.[7]
The designers' reading list is on record. Early Releases on Maxine's Quest (about 2022) gives each of eight planned titles an "Inspired by" line. Labyrinth of the Dragon Tyrant cites a "2.5d-rogue-like, with 2d hints of Gauntlet, Ultima, and Pac-Man, and 3d hints of Bard's Tale and Dungeons of Daggaroth".[a] Raindrop Planet cites "coconuts, farmville"; Molecules of Mars, "Moon Patrol meets" a Mars trilogy of novels; SARS Odyssey, Missile Command among six others; Genomic Ranger, "Combat, Gunslinger". Poop of the Gods gives a style instead: "Tempest meets Qbert but with giant alien space-gods who poop."[8]
The company's word for an experiment played as a game is experigaming. Its technical overview of December 2022 predicted that "just as with PCs, 'experigaming' will be a major application".[7]
