Keltar's quip library is the set of forty short recordings in which Keltar, the company's felt mascot, reacts to an answer in JeoPOREdy!, the quiz game of EQBio-OS. Twenty are for right answers and twenty for wrong ones. They are synthesized speech in the voice that reads the game's clues, and they run 62.6 seconds in all. The shortest lasts 0.78 seconds and the longest 2.82.[1]

Playback

When a player submits an answer, the game has the server score it and then plays one clip from the matching list. After a right answer it plays a random right-answer clip, then Keltar's commentary on the clue. After a wrong answer it plays a random wrong-answer clip, then a recording of the correct answer, then the commentary.[1] Seventeen of the twenty wrong-answer clips end in a comma because the answer follows.

The draw is uniform and has no memory, so the same clip can play twice in a row, one chance in twenty. A box left empty when the ten seconds run out is submitted as it stands and takes the wrong-answer path, although the docstring of the script that made the recordings describes the wrong-answer clips as following a non-blank answer.[1]

Track listing

Both sides are listed in the order of the game's manifest, with lengths measured from the audio files.[a]

18 "Afraid not. The correct answer is," 1.99
19 "Sorry, no. The actual answer is," 1.91
20 "Regrettably incorrect. The answer is," 2.12

The right-answer side lasts 25.3 seconds, an average of 1.27 seconds a clip. The wrong-answer side lasts 37.2 seconds, an average of 1.86, so the regrets run 47 percent longer than the praise. Three clips tie for the shortest, "Right on!", "Nope!" and "Incorrect." at 0.78 seconds. The longest is "That's not what we were looking for. The answer is," at 2.82.

Production

A script sends each line of text to a text-to-speech service and saves the audio under a numbered file name, skipping any file that exists, then writes the manifest that the game loads once. Its docstring calls the set the 40 "permanent" snippets. The forty files carry modification times between 06:10:52 and 06:11:32 on April 18, 2026, server time, which is about one a second.[1]

Elsewhere

A sales page on the company's sites loads five of the forty, three for right answers and two for wrong ones. It plays only the right-answer clips, at low volume, when a visitor points at or presses a button, and it fetches the wrong-answer clips "Nope!" and "Unfortunately, no. The correct response was," without playing them. It stays silent for visitors whose browsers ask for reduced motion.[1]

Notes

  1. ^ The manifest spells two right-answer clips with a dash, "A fine answer, correct!" and "Marvelous, correct!"; the dash is given here as a comma.
