Summary
| Description | Outline profiles of three protein pores at a common scale, drawn by code from the deposited structures: alpha-hemolysin (PDB 7AHL, 7 subunits), MspA (PDB 1UUN, 8 subunits) and CsgG (PDB 4UV3, 9 subunits), as oriented by the OPM database. Each outline is the rotational envelope of all protein atoms with their van der Waals radii, in 0.1 nm slices along the pore axis, lightly smoothed, and mirrored about the axis; it is a profile, not a slice through an atomic model. The width traced at a constriction depends on how the side chains are counted, so the drawn width at each orange band is set to the figure given in the article (1.4, 1.2 and 0.9 nm); the band for MspA is 0.6 nm tall. The grey bands are 4 nm thick and centred on the membrane positions computed by OPM. CsgG is drawn with its periplasmic cage uppermost, upside down relative to its place in the bacterial outer membrane, so that all three vestibules sit above the membrane. |
